Apple today unveiled its new Digital ID feature, allowing users to securely create a verified ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport. With this tool, users can seamlessly present identification directly from their iPhone or Apple Watch. The rollout begins in beta at over 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide.
The feature expands Apple’s digital identity offerings, providing travelers and everyday users with a fast, secure way to confirm identity. It aims to reduce the need to carry physical documents by enabling instant verification through Apple’s encrypted systems. Apple confirmed the initiative will initially focus on domestic air travel within the United States.
Digital ID offers convenience for users who may not possess a REAL ID-compliant license or state ID. While it supports in-person identity checks, Apple clarified that the digital form cannot substitute a passport for international travel or border crossings. Instead, it complements existing physical credentials with added digital accessibility.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said the company continues to enhance how individuals verify their identity securely. She noted the 2022 addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Wallet helped shape development of the new feature, which integrates Apple’s advanced encryption and biometric authentication technologies.
Creating a Digital ID is simple. Users can scan their passport using their iPhone’s camera and read the embedded electronic chip to authenticate details. They complete verification by taking a selfie and performing facial and head movements, ensuring a high standard of security before the Digital ID is stored in Apple Wallet.
Once verified, the Digital ID can be used instantly where accepted. TSA checkpoints equipped to recognize the technology will allow quick scanning via iPhone or Apple Watch. Travelers can enjoy a contactless experience, presenting their IDs without handing over a physical document, improving both speed and privacy during verification.
As Apple expands partnerships, Digital ID could soon support other real-world uses such as hotel check-ins, event access, and government verifications. The company is reportedly in discussions with state and federal regulators to enable broader adoption in future updates, ensuring complete alignment with privacy and security standards.
By integrating identification into its ecosystem, Apple continues moving toward a wallet-free, device-driven lifestyle. The launch of Digital ID not only enhances convenience but also reinforces Apple’s long-term vision of replacing traditional wallets with secure, privacy-focused digital alternatives that simplify everyday interactions while keeping user data protected
