Intel and BOE have teamed up to launch a new suite of AI-powered display technologies for laptops, including the innovative 1Hz Refresh Rate feature. This technology can drop the laptop screen refresh rate to as low as 1Hz when content is static, such as reading documents or viewing photos, which reduces power consumption by up to 65% and extends battery life significantly.
Another key innovation is Intel’s Multi-Frequency Display (MFD) technology, which smartly adjusts refresh rates across different parts of the screen. It dynamically lowers the refresh rate for static areas like the taskbar while allowing high refresh rates for video playback or gaming segments. This intelligent coordination between the OS, GPU, and display panel optimizes power efficiency without compromising visual performance.
Intel’s SmartPower HDR technology complements these features by managing display voltage based on screen brightness. When HDR content displays darker scenes, this system lowers backlight voltage to save energy while maintaining the dynamic contrast and brightness essential for a high-quality HDR experience, thereby improving overall battery endurance during multimedia use.
This collaboration builds on a decade-long partnership between Intel and BOE, with BOE producing about 30% of global LCD panels. Together, they integrate BOE’s advanced panel manufacturing with Intel’s proprietary AI-driven display management to pioneer energy-saving technologies. This joint effort aims to push mainstream adoption of these features, enhancing user experience through longer-lasting laptop batteries.
Intel aims to embed these AI display technologies in OEM laptops powered by its Lunar Lake processors starting in 2026. By blending sophisticated refresh rate management and power optimization at the hardware and firmware levels, Intel and BOE intend to set new benchmarks for energy efficiency and performance in portable computing devices.
